Resolved Question: Do you think this man had a absolute constitutional right to do this arrested Flag-burning man sues city?

A Hondo man who was cited for burning the Mexican flag in front of the Alamo is suing the city of San Antonio, park rangers and The Daughters of the Republic of Texas over the matter. David Bohmfalk, 48, claims he burned the flag on May 17, 2007, to protest a Senate bill that would have given amnesty to millions of unauthorized immigrants. The measure did not become law. His lawsuit, moved Friday to federal court from state court, alleges rangers with the Alamo and the city violated his First Amendment right to free speech. The suit alleges false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. It seeks unspecified compensatory and exemplary damages. The officers, the suit said, detained Bohmfalk more than an hour and called him a terrorist before deciding to cite him with illegal burning without a permit, a misdemeanor. Bohmfalk, a disabled veteran and former police chief of Bracketville, tried to get a permit, but the city does not issue permits for flag burning, said his lawyer, Jason Jakob. Jakob also said even though the flag was not an American flag, activity the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled is constitutionally protected free speech, does not matter. In court-filed responses, lawyers for the city and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, which operates the Alamo, deny most of the allegations. The city in October 2007 backed away from collecting a $198 fine from Bohmfalk. Prosecutors dismissed the charge once Bohmfalk made a public plea and the case received national attention. The suit said that while Bohmfalk was detained by Alamo rangers, city park rangers arrived and began discussing what felony they could charge him with. They called him a “domestic terrorist” and questioned his mental stability, the suit said. Bohmfalk’s suit said that while detained, he was harassed, his life was threatened by passersby and that some tourists spit on him. No one else was cited or charged, the suit said. “He has an absolute constitutional right to do this,” Jakob said. “The biggest reason he is (suing) is because the police never should have detained him in the first place ..... He also does not want this to happen to anyone else.” http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/48803602.html more

Voting Question: 1. What have been the key success factors for Sony?

Sony Started as a radio repair shop, founded by Masuru Ikura and Akio Morita after Would War II. The company began its long history of producing compact consumer electronics in 1957, when it introduced the World’s first pocket-sized all-transistor radio. The company’s name, Sony, was taken from Sony, the Latin word for “sound” Sony went on to invest a series of transistor-based TVs and increasingly smaller audiocassette recorders. In 1979, the Sony Walkman introduced the World to a new, portable way of listening to music. Sony became a world leader in consumer electronics and was the first Japanese company to have its shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange. In the late 1980s, Sony began expanding into media, purchasing a U.S. record company (CSB records for $22 billion in 1988). And a major Hollywood studio (Columbia Pictures for $4.9 billion in 1989). The purchases made Sony a major force in the entertainment industry. The importance of marketing at Sony started with Akio Morita, who said that for a company to be successful, it must have three kinds of creativity: creativity to make inventions, creativity in planning and production, and creativity in marketing. Creativity in marketing at Sony means not just cleaver ads, but deep insight into its customers. For example, Sony knows its playstation customers like to find clues and to decode things. So Sony’s ads for playstation 2, like “Signs,” feature a young man walking the streets of a city where he encounters various signs foreshadowing the events. Mannequins appear in a store window, arms outstretched, and point enigmatically to something that’s about to happen. “The lead character is almost in the midst of his own role-playing game. He needs to follows clues to save the heroine”, said Andrew House, Sony’s executive vice president of marketing. In the ads, “we were essentially trying to tap into a range of emotions that we think we deliver in the games – intrigue, forebonding, excitement, panic, relief and achievement at the end”. Sony’s marketing also includes careful measurement of each campaign’s effectiveness. Foe example, Sony runs 30-second commercials for its Playstation as part of the previews in more than 1,800 theatres and on 8,000 movie screens. The ads appear before such films as “The Cat in the Hat”. Sony Computer Entertainment America has been running movie ads for six years.” Cinema advertising has been very effective for us”, said Amil Blaire, director of product marketing.” The reason why we have committed to cinema every year is the tremendous unaided recall shown by our own research and communicus – commissioned ad tracking”. Another example of measurement is Sony’s GenY youth marketing efforts. “The online program promoting the NetMD ATRAC CD Walkman and Cybershot U30 ran July 1 through September 30, 2003, and we found that more than 70 percent static banners”, said Serge Del Grosso, Director of Media and Internet Strategy, Sony Electronics”. In fact, Sony has even developed a direct-marketing solution which it sells to other companies who want to measure marketing effectiveness. The product, called eBridge[TM], allows marketers to use video, measure the effectiveness of the campaign, and gain insight into the target audience, all in one package. Sony expects that the next big breakthrough will not come from a single new electronic device.Rather, Sony President Kunitake Ando says that the future lies in making a whole range of devices more usefully linking them in a networked home-entertainment system. The company believes that its clout in consumer electronics, combined with its media content, will allow it to steer that convergence in a way that suits it. Whether the future of convergence resides in TV’s or PC’s or devices , $62-billion Sony makes every one of them- with a strong brand name that gives them an extra push off retail shelves around the world. 1. What have been the key success factors for Sony? 2. What recommendations would you make to senior marketing executives going forward? What should they he sure to do with its marketing? more

Voting Question: Why are people so bigoted to those with mental illness?

While reading the answers people gave to a concerned parent whose child was expelled for a strange poem, I saw that most suggested that he seek psychiatric counseling instead of legal help (one stating that they weren't kidding). But, whether or not this person is mentally disturbed isn't the point. Assuming that this person is crazy, the school would be breaking the law for expelling someone who's mentally ill. Just because a person is different, they think it's okay to discriminate against him and deny him his constitutional and human rights. This reminds me of how colleges and universities have taken very drastic, unethical measures to ensure the safety of their students by trying to kick out their mentally ill students without going as far as to expel them (because then they would lose to a law suit). People seem to find this kind of behavior by the schools as acceptable just because one asian kid decided to shoot up his university. However, just because a person is mentally ill, doesn't mean that they're violent. No one has the right to violate a person's rights just because they're crazy. Just like no one has the right to take away a person's rights on the grounds that their skin color is different, or that they're gay, or anything else that might make a person different. This is why I think it's right that a liberal democratic government exercise its authority to enact unpopular policies so that those who don't have enough voting power will be granted the same rights as the majority. To nicepuddin: But, what's the statistical likelihood of someone who writes in strange prose will actually shoot up their school? Does anyone actually know HOW MANY PEOPLE actually fit your category? According to the National Institute of Mental Health: "When applied to the 2004 U.S. Census residential population estimate for ages 18 and older, this figure translates to 57.7 million people." Can you really justify discrimination against 57 million people because of the actions of 40 kids?source: http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/the-numbers-count-mental-disorders-in-america/index.shtml#CensusBureauTable2I'm sorry, I didn't mention what was the quote in reference to (I'm tired). The NIMH figure was for those who have a mental disorder. But, that is a general term and many do fit that category. However, a more specific disorder such as schizophrenia (one I gather most people are concerned with), the NIMH states that "Approximately 2.4 million American adults, or about 1.1 percent of the population age 18 and older in a given year."Smaller numbers, but my point is still valid. You can't let 40 instances of a school shooting over the past couple of decades affect policy which dictates only 2.4 million people. 40 out of 2,400,000 is in no way a majority. Unfortunately, 1.1% isn't a large enough number affect any change through the democratic process. Since it's only 1.1% many people will look the other way when these people are discriminated against. Even though Drixnot thinks it's right, even she can see the logical fallacy behind a school basing its policies on the actions of a small handful of students out of the 2.4 million with schizophrenia or the 57.7 million with a mental disorder in general. more

The combination of devotion, dedication & technology just takes my breath away...!!! BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (CNN) -- The swearing-in of Jorge Rivas into Argentina's Congress brought tears among his fellow lawmakers, as the Socialist Party politician was wheeled into the legislative chamber 17 months after a beating left him quadriplegic and unable to speak. As pieces of paper rained down from the hall's upper levels, representatives of every political stripe on Wednesday gave Rivas a standing ovation, beat the railings and chanted his name, "Jorge! Jorge! Jorge!" When he was not being embraced, kissed, patted and embraced some more, Rivas, wearing a dark suit, smiled broadly and nodded vigorously. "He must know how to adapt to all kinds of difficulties to be able to do what he did today," said Rep. Ariel Basteiro, also a member of the Socialist Party. "To be able to overcome what he did today moved him ahead in life but also, on the other hand, showed this as something plausible for him, because he achieved this purely and exclusively through the tenacity of his force, his desires to fight," Basteiro said. Rivas was attacked in November 2007 during a robbery in Buenos Aires. Wednesday's show of support rippled across all boundaries. "It was a moving moment for everyone because, independent of the different policies, his will to live, to be and to participate politically is admirable," said Fernando Iglesias, a member of the opposition Civic Coalition Party. "This is something that forms a part of Rivas' history and today he has made a very clear showing," Iglesias said. Rivas owed his return to his friend, Eduardo Lazzati, who devoted many of the resources of his software company HadaSoft toward devising a way -- using a computer -- to help Rivas return to his job as a lawmaker. "There had been no precedent of a person enclosed in himself" being able to communicate solely through a computer, he said, referring to the fact that Rivas cannot control his hands. "It's one thing for a person to be able to send a message to the nurse, and another thing for someone to be disposed to administer their things, their patrimony and to be a citizen and, in this case, a legislator," Lazzati said. But HadaSoft created a program -- now available to anyone without charge -- that Rivas employs to use his computer, to write, to talk. Rivas' gaze controls the position of the mouse, which he uses to call up programs. The House of Representatives is expected to adapt to the new reality posed by Rivas' physical limitations. For example, the other representatives' presence is measured by a weight sensor in each seat. Rivas' presence will be measured by a sensor on a platform that holds his wheelchair more

Resolved Question: As a conservative, am I entitled to dislike George W. Bush?

I supported most of Bush's national security and foreign policy measures (with the exception of the Iraq invasion and the Guest Worker Bill, both of which I strongly opposed). I supported the Patriot Act. On the other hand, I opposed Bush's 2001 tax cut and his belief that a strong dollar is not important. Most of all, I dislike George W. Bush's personal character. He repeatedly lied about his prior DUI conviction and didn't admit to it until the story broke. He is a draft-dodger who went AWOL on the National Guard. As a Guardsman myself, I can tell you that there are dire consequences for failure to report for Guard duty, so I am amazed that Bush was never disciplined for these actions. I wanted to throw up when I saw Bush wearing that flight suit and it made me sick every time he proclaimed himself to be a "war president" and a man of honor and dignity and courage.Sgt Red: your bigoted, racist comments make you a disgrace to everyone who serves in uniform. more

Resolved Question: BEsT AnSwEr WiLl BE SeLecTEd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (constant, control, variable???)?

Biology Thermoregulation Experiment Purpose To investigate the responses of the human body to extremes of ambient temperature. Materials Each group will require: oral thermometer skin thermometer alcohol swabs buckets/tubs hot and cold water ice cubes spray bottle stopwatch electric fan heater sleeping bag bathing suit hat, scarf and gloves Procedure Read the procedure and formulate an hypothesis about the effect that extremes in in ambient temperature (after 20-minute exposure) will have on core temperature (as measure by an oral thermometer) and skin temperature in humans. Complete this section of data sheet 1. Identify the variable, control and factors that will be kept constant. The experimental procedure should take no longer than 30 minutes. Work in groups of 3 or 4. Stop if the subject/s feel unwell at any time. Cold subjects: Record skin and core temperatures of the subject before you begin. Make the subject/s as cold as possible by: -wearing bathers -placing in a cold breezeway -placing feet in buckets of icy water -exposing the body to ice from a spray bottle containing icy water Hot subjects: Record skin and core temperatures of the subject before you begin. Make the subject/s as hot as possible by: -wrapping in a sleeping bag -wearing hat, scarf and gloves -sitting in front of a heater For both cold and hot subjects, record the core and skin temperature every 2 minutes, as well as any other observations. Record the class results. Using a Spreadsheet graph the temperature readings for core and skin temperature against time for your subject/s. __________________________________________________________ Okay, from reading the above I'm supposed to identify the variable, control and contants. I don't know what all those terms mean. So, if anyone could provide examples of those it would be appreciated. Or better just identify the variable, control and constants and explain why they are so that I know why and what these terms are. more

Resolved Question: Whats your opinion on public schooling?

This might sound a little childish but hear me out, im currently in 9th grade and cant wait to go to high school. Im learning things that you will never need to know like how to measure the angle of a slope. That among other things is really making me wonder why this hasn't been changed. High school will be much better because you chose the courses that suit you and you needs. I could go on and on about this but you know what i mean, whats your opinion? Do you agree with me? Why or Why not. thanks, Coryelementary school- kindergarden - grade 6 junior high - 7 - 9 high school - 10 - 12 more

Resolved Question: What do you think of this? Crew member sues?

HOUSTON - A member of the crew on the U.S.-flagged ship hijacked by African pirates is suing the owner and another company, accusing them of knowingly putting sailors in danger. Richard E. Hicks alleges in the suit that owner Maersk Line Limited and Waterman Steamship Corp., which provided the crew, ignored requests to improve safety measures for vessels sailing along the Somali coast. Hicks was chief cook on the Maersk Alabama. Pirates held the ship’s captain hostage for five days until the U.S. Navy rescued him. His suit seeks at least $75,000 in damages and improved safety through armed security, safer routes, allowing crew to carry weapons and fencing to stop pirates from boarding. Officials for Norfolk, Va.-based Maersk Line and Mobile, Ala.-based Waterman said their companies don’t comment on pending litigation. “I’m just trying to make sure this is a lot better for other seamen,” said Hicks, who might find another line of work after 32 years as a merchant seaman. He said his family is concerned about him returning to sea. http://www.bostonherald.com/news/national/southwest/view/2009_04_27_Pirate_victim_sues_cos__over_safety_concern/srvc=news&position=recent_bullet more

Resolved Question: Do You Think People Is Over Praising Goku?

I've been looking at Goku verses threads all over the international network, and notice that people is giving Goku to much credit. I've seen stuff like goku verses Galactus(like as if that is a fair match up) and to make it worst they believe goku would win! To me! Goku rates as the 6th to 5th powerful supernatural entity(1 being the highest) Goku-_-: Max Power level was 1,080,000,000(no i am not counting Dbgt because Akira Toriyama didn't have much to do with dbgt) Goku never been able to take lava nor the sun! When Krillin thrown a rock at SSj Goku head it hurt em' Goku is powerful, but no where near the power of marvel finest. Galactus: Galactus possesses cosmic power beyond the abilities of human beings to measure. Galactus is able to use the vast energies within him for an incalculable number of effects. Some of his most rudimentary abilities are the molecular restructuring or conversion of matter, the projection of energy with enormous concussive force, the teleportation of objects across space or even time, and the erection of invincible energy-screens and force fields. Even his heralds, whom he has endowed with a small fraction of his ever-renewing power, are able to manipulate matter and energy in ways far beyond human comprehension. Galactus wears a full-body suit of armor constructed from an unknown extraterrestrial metal that permits him to regulate and control his personal energy. If he were to remove the armor, the vast cosmic energies that empower him would run rampant, with the potential to turn him into a small sun. Galactus requires unknown energies obtainable only from a certain type of planet in order to sustain his life. The suitable type of planet need not be one where life is present, but it must have the potential to support life. Although he is able to extract and absorb this energy himself, he generally employs a complicated array of equipment to perform the conversion process for him. The equipment is not only more efficient than he is, but also enables him to avoid the needless expenditure of energy involved in the process. Sometimes Galactus drains the energies he needs from a planet while still leaving it barely habitable. Other times he destroys all life and water on the planet in the process, leaving its surface devastated and barren. Most often his feeding process destroys the planet, reducing it to space rubble. When Galactus was newly born in his current form, the energy of a medium-size Earth-like planet was enough to sustain him for over a century (using Earthly measurements of time). Now, for unknown reasons, he needs to feed about once a month. His body totally converts the energy he absorbs for its life functions and bodily activities without any waste products. Galactus is telepathic, able to scan the thoughts of any mind he has yet encountered, no matter how alien or advanced it was.Dragon ball is wasn't even a good cartoon! Resolved Question: In answer to mankinds' reasoning, or loss of it?

Before anything can be created, time has to be accounted for and measured. The Eternal clock having been made, and once the pendulum of life had gathered its' momentum, time now in full swing, all of the angels were sent out to sow the seeds of all the galaxies from one end of the cosmos to the other. The ground had been prepared and drills were laid out in order to prevent overcrowding, so that the weeding would be easier. The world on which we live was planted in this most fertile part of the universe and it was called the milky way, because it was the place where life could flourish abundantly. Careful measurements were made to take into account the great yield that would be produced and unseen hands calculated all the distances between the stars and planets so that they should not bump into each other. Our earth was set in its' orbit around the Sun and every mineral and chemical reaction was provided so that circumstances for life to exist might be given the topmost priority. Ninety nine per cent of the material consisted of elements useful in the making of vessels of every shapes and size (not to mention mountains, valleys and great continents) and clay was formed of Alumina Silica and water ( AL2 O3 - 2Si O2 - 2H2O ). Remember, as yet Oxygen had not come into being and so in heavenly terms these calculations would come afterwards, to underline the processes involved. As a matter of fact none of the Elements came into being without the seeds being fertilised and watering was necessary to sustain growth. The watering can in those unseen hands was kept full to the brim and trowels were in constant use. In this whirlpool of starstudded activity close attention was paid to detail so that mankind could be afforded the opportunity to grow, and to live, work and play in an environment that suited every need. There was much enthusiasm in the heavens encouraging creation to lift itself from the day of the behemoth and leviathan to our present day civilisation. The dividers in our creators hands had long before set the time limit for humanity to exist upon the surface of this planet, and the curtain was ready to be raised on a stage that with so much planning and forethought had been meticulously prepared. The days had even been numbered alongside every single event that would take place and occasionally God has been observed checking his pocket diary. Perhaps it was the tick tock of the eternal clock itself upon the heavenly mantel that comforted the Almighty in his Throne room while all the angels were busy about their task, but, looking forward to that day of rest he knew, there would be a couple of things to deal with first. more

Voting Question: This is for Girls Only!!!?

I'm fourteen. One of my breasts is roughly a cup size smaller than the other. I'm only a B cup anyway, but that to me just makes it more noticeable. Its been a few months and it still hasn't caught up with the bigger one. It sucks and it scares me that it may not grow evenly. I measured too, and the other is an inch bigger than the small one. Is it normal to be this much un even? Its been a while and they still haven't caught up with each other, and now its to where I would have actual cleavage if the other was the same. Summer is coming up. What if someone notices because I'm in a swimming suit? If this is normal, how and when will it ever catch up? Please, I need an answer. I don't want to be un even the rest of my life. more

Voting Question: Business suits for completely average people never fit!?

I measure right between 44r and 44l but even most 48s are cut in away that I could rip the back clean off with one good flex. To get to were I can actually just cross my arms I am swimming beyond were they could take it in. Should I just give up and get a tailor-made suit? How much do they run? Resolved Question: Poll: Are you for or against this idea?

Here's the idea. The very first amendment of the United States Constitution specifically grants people the freedom of religion, so that the state cannot impede the free worship and practice of religion by its citizens. This is part of the cornerstone of freedom of speech protected by our Bill of Rights. Let's say there's a concept that a certain special interest group comes up with. It feels insulted by a cornerstone of a number of religions, so it wishes to seek government action (law) to redefine this cornerstone concept, which was established by religion, in order to suit its own interests and force its agenda on others. Would you be for or against this legislation that the special interest group pushes for? (Keep in mind that it would be taking away the freedom of religion, or as Thomas Jefferson called it "separation of church and state.") And let's say that a counter-measure to bolster the Constitution and make sure this doesn't happen is voted in place by a majority of citizens, and the special-interest group immediately begins protesting it and calling it discrimination and wishing to take it to court. What would you think of that?Okay, basically for all those who may be confused by that: A number of religions have a certain fundamental idea. The special interest group doesn't like that idea, so it lobbies for a law that would allow the government to change the definition of that fundamental idea. more

Voting Question: Does anyone have tips for me?

I have a problem. I have been preparing for a big photo shoot for almost 2 months now (just trying to get off the holiday weight) and I feel like I haven't made any process. I changed my lifestyle so to say. I wake up every morning anywhere between 7 and 9 and do about 20 minutes of yoga, tai chi, or pilates before I start to get ready for class. 6 days a week I do at least 45 minutes of cardio (I run each time for a minimum of 30 minutes, about 7mph) and most of the time on a treadmill at my gym. Then I do at least 30 minutes of weight training including back squats, dumbell curls, hip abductors, rowing, pull ups, dips, and other miscellaneous machines. I rotate my workout to give myself a variety. I will combine running with biking or the elliptical some days and I always switch up my weight training. I have also changed my eating habits. I try to eat some form of protein every morning and I have been eating 2-4 bananas a day along with several other fruits, at least one serving of vegetables, and plenty of water (I rarely drink juice or milk and never coffee or anything like that). I also have been drinking organic apple cider vinegar (2 tsp) before each of my meals for three weeks in a row then I stop for a week. I am 5'3'' and I weigh about 120 lbs (which seems high for my height). I am not fat by any means and I'm not really concerned about my weight as I am with the fat I am unable to lose on my love handles and inner thighs. I am just trying to tone up and I have been measuring my waist (which has decreased by about half an inch), my love handles, my upper thighs, and my upper arms. I thought maybe i have hit a fat loss plateau but I don't feel as though I've lost much fat at all. I have to model bathing suits and I don't feel as though my body is prepared for that. So my question is does anyone have any advice or tips that would help me lose this last bit of fat on my love handles and upper thighs? It seems impossible for me to do that regardless of my exercise and eating habits! more

Resolved Question: FtM, Genderqueer, Transgender, etc: Where do you shop for clothes?

I was talking to my partner the other day about getting a nice suit jacket for myself - I'm always envying his. He'd like to take me to the store where he buys all his nice shirts, ties and jackets from (He's taken me there before, and bought me a gorgeous shirt and tie). It's very much a Men's clothing store, run by these older Italian men, where they measure you and make sure everything's a good fit. I'm... not entirely comfortable with this idea. I already have a difficult time shopping for clothes as it is, without having to worry about being measured, etc. in the store. I know I dress (and pass for the most part) as male, but the men who work in this store have only really seen me as a woman, not a man. I think why it bothers me most is I don't want to be the center of attention. I'd really like to be able to shop and not be bothered by this kind of thing. FtM/TS/TG/GQ/ETC, where do you shop for clothing, and do you have any kind of difficulty from sales associates? I mean, personally I just want to be left alone, it's like clothes shopping is already traumatic enough without adding to it. I wish I could be just a bit more confident when I'm out, I just don't know why this bothers me so much. Anyone else run into this kind of an issue? Thanks in advance for your replies.Jay: I don't really have anyone to "shopping buddy" with, let alone someone who understands the issues I'm dealing with. :( more

Resolved Question: can someone help me get a hypothesis on earth-sun motions lab?

my teacher asked to do a prelab on earth-motion lab and i dont know what can i put for a hypothesis on it. so this is what my paper says. During the course of a day, the sun moves across the sky.the motion is due to earth's rotation. in ancient times, one of the earliest devices used by people to study the sun's motion was the shadow stick. the shadow stick is a primitive form of a sundial. before clocks were invented, sundials were one of the only means of telling time. In this lab, you will use a stationary object as your primitve sundial. outisde you will find a tree, corner, fence post ect. tha is stationary and casting a shadow that you can record. Material: -tape,masking -ruler,metric -chalk -clock or watch -paper -pencil Form a hypothesis pick a location that you believe will best suit your needs. brainstorm with a partnet a way in which you can use the object casting a shadow in an experiment to measure the movement of earth for 60 min. since i didnt understand how to make a hypothesis with this information, im asking if anyone can please help me get a hypothesis. thank you. more

Resolved Question: How do you measure the value of life?

Read this. A friend sent this to me for a paper he is writing, I was just supposed to edit it, but holy crap. It caught me up and made me think, I have some questions at the end. A small boy was born in a town in the Middle East, while a small boy was born in New York City. The small boy in the middle east grows up to be seven and then die, the small boy in New York grows up to be a successful business man and then dies of old age at 80. Who had more meaning on earth? Some people might say that the business man had more meaning for whatever reason, some might steer towards saying the middle eastern child having more meaning. Or some people might also say that human life is human life, and they are both equal. Human life is human life obviously, and while the businessman might have had more of an effect on people around him, did he really have more meaning in the long run? Humans are always searching for a purpose in life, because after all without a purpose nobody would feel the need to exist. Whether we worship a god, or raise a family, or get a successful job, everybody is on a hunt for a purpose. Some succeed in finding a pupose to live, such as the businessman I mentioned, where as others don’t, such as the child who died. But does purpose really give a human life more value than others? Is a man in a suit, going to work, walking next to a beggar really more important than the beggar? Most would probably think that the man in the suit is more important, even if they might not admit to it. We roam the earth everyday, consuming space, doing our daily tasks, but in the long run do we actually have a reason to do so? Just because I did my homework today, is that going to do anything beneficial for me, besides give me better grades? Obviously its going to keep me in school and as a result give me a better life, but is there any point in having a better life? It's going to end no matter what anyway, so when I die will it matter what I did all those years? All the hard work, all the stress and emotion we put up with on a day to day basis, is it going to mean anything later on? If you believe in a heaven and hell then the answer to that question will be yes, but I don’t believe in any of that. Heaven and hell to me seem like something humanity made up to make themselves feel good about what they are doing now because in the afterlife they will have eternal benefits because of it. In reality nothing we do now is going to matter when we die, it’s a depressing thought, but a true one at that. We can do good or bad in our life time, but we benefit or pay for it in this lifetime too. Once we die all the good we did wont matter and all the bad we did wont matter, nothing will matter then. The things we do everyday are just to make tomorrow a little better than today. Every emotion you have ever felt will have been pointless, you might feel sad now, or maybe happy, but that’s not going to have any affect on your decaying body 6 feet underground in a cemetery somewhere. This is starting to sound like some type of depressing story, but I am only trying to state what I believe to be facts. As sad as it all sounds, it’s a much overlooked thing. I never really thought much about this until recently, but most things people do are things to make them feel like they have more meaning than just another person whose going to live and die and then be forgotten. Church is my number one example of this. Why do people worship this god they that have no idea exists or not? If you asked one of them, the answer you would get might be something about wanting to go to heaven. And as I have already told you my belief is that heaven is just something made up by people to feel like there is something more than just being non-existent after death. Therefore their belief is that their purpose in life is to live out god’s word so they can go to heaven, which proves my two points, that they are looking for a purpose on earth, and they are looking for something more when they die. I’m not saying that there is no point in doing what we do everyday because that’s not true. If nobody worked and everyone sat around in this depressed slump all the time because they all knew it wont matter later, then life would be even more pointless and nobody would have any fun. It's defiantly a great thing that everyone does what they do because it allows us to enjoy life until the time comes when we do pass on. So. Uh, here are my questions. How do you measure the value of a life, or life in general? Does purpose really give a human life more value than others? Define Life. Define Purpose. Define Happiness. Which one was more important in your eyes(successful business man or young child), and why? If you believe in God, and Heaven and Hell. Why, and what proof do you have that gives you faith? Or if you believe in something else, what is it and why do you believe in it? more

Or if you believe in something else, what is it and why do you believe in it? more

Resolved Question: creationists everywhere - put your beliefs to the test?

you believe the bible is historical fact then please explain a few things to this slow evolutionist 1. the appendix- just why, god gave us an organ that has no essential function but can randomly for no reason kill you 2. adam and eve- how did the human race develop into such a diverse species from 2 individuals and where did their children get there spouses (incest me thinks) 3. dinosaurs - they existed you can never deny that so why didn't god mention he created them then let them die 4. made in gods image- he made sunsets rainbows and mountain tops, what sort of off day was he having when he made humans, some are beautiful but most average people can't measure up to what he supposedly created. 5. what about other planets- genesis doesn't mention them ? 6. after the flood--- no plant life on land, only 2 of every animal (7 if it was a clean beast (bet you didn't know that)) only 8 people 3 of which are children of 2 of the others, how the hell was the earth repopulated and also explain away how in observable timescales populations have been shown to adapt and change to better suit their environment and new species have been seen to emerge how come so many very similar but slightly different species exist (was god running out of ideas or do they have a common ancestor) my goal here is not to insult but to engage in debate and i hope you try to reply with logic and reason rather then claiming im ignorant and saying so in a brisk mannernumber 2 says no ESSENTIAL function you can live without it so it obviously doesnt perform one it serves a function in your immune system but that is greatly outweighed by the negative impact of it killing yousorry if the amount of questions is overwhelming but simply stating that doesnt constitute an answer feel free to answer as many or as few as you likeagain i admit the appendix has some function but it is outweighed by the killing you thingthe incest remake isnt a matter of law its a matter of genetics inbreeding results in deformities ofter several generalions and there are now 6.7 billion of us with no problems40 days under salt water would have killed all land based plant life. that cant be deniedi want reasoning and logic not biblical quotes you should all be ashamed that an atheist answered better then everyone else put togetheri want reasoning and logic not biblical quotes you should all be ashamed that an atheist answered better then everyone else put togetheras i sai i would and at the insistance of dan balls i will now adress all of your problems 6ofus didnt answer the question and dreams of water did not read the question godess afoot states her own beliefs and again doesnt answer stpolycarp77 didnt answer it either ginger kid has no concept of how variation as broad as that which is seen in the world is not possible from 2 people. neither does usmclmd chieko- didnt read the question and has no understanding of genetics or the timescale of when dinosaurs existed (the behemoth mentioned in the bible is widely believesd to be an elephant or hippo) fancier didnt read the question but i liked his answer to 2 and 4 but again doesnt understand dinosaurs were 65 million years ago, a time scale never mentioned in the bible thomas H - explains what the boile is but doesnt answer the question sweet suzy 777- doesnt get that incest issues in this case arent matters of law but matters of genetics and doesnt know what an apendix isramona confuses behemoth to mean dinosaur and does answer dan blacks- stupid comment interspersed with serious debate we didnt evolve from neanderthals we both evolved from a common ansestor and despite their greater brain capacity we survived due to our quicker reproduction god created everthing on earth in 7 days so surely the dinosaurs would still be around when adam and eve were createdredyps- ilike your answer in general but explain these problems problems- 1. it plays a function in the immune system but that is not essential and it can kill you therfore it would be better if we didnt have it (or it didnt kill you and im sure god could figure that out) 2. :^) 3. its nonsense and the timescales wrong 4. the question was only a reference to dara o briain doing stand up on the subject so im not bothered 5. :^) 6.it rose to other 500m above sea level so it must have mixed with the sea and so have been salty. this flood lasted for 300days and would have blocked out most ground level light so no land plants could have possibley survived 7. :^) 8. its an ok answerwhat questions!!! and btw http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_evolution#Homo_neanderthalensis common ancestor!! we did not evolve from them they evolved from the same thing we did more

Resolved Question: Do Gays Truly Seek Tolerance?

Here is a story (from AP) about gays going after people who exercised their right to vote. I've also seen video on youtube of gays attacking people who were for prop 8. There have also been news stories of them going after churches and their congregations. Is this the tolerance they scream so loud for? SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Supporters of the ballot measure that banned same-sex "marriage" in California have filed a lawsuit seeking to block their campaign finance records from public view, saying the reports have led to the harassment of donors. "No one should have to worry about getting a death threat because of the way he or she votes," said James Bopp, Jr., an attorney representing two groups that supported Proposition 8, Protect Marriage.com and the National Organization for Marriage California. "This lawsuit will protect the right of all people to help support causes they agree with, without having to worry about harassment or threats." The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in federal court in Sacramento, asks the court to order the secretary of state's office to remove all donations for the proposition from its website. It also asks the court to relieve the two groups and "all similarly situated persons" from having to meet the state's campaign disclosure requirements. That would include having to file a final report on Proposition 8 contributions at the end of January, as well as reports for any future campaigns the groups undertake. Proposition 8, approved by 52.3 percent of California voters on Nov. 4, reversed a state Supreme Court decision allowing homosexual marriage. The measure's opponents have asked the Supreme Court to overturn it. The lawsuit filed Wednesday cites a series of incidents in which those who gave money to support Proposition 8 received threatening phone calls, e-mails and postcards. One woman claims she was told: "If I had a gun, I would have gunned you down along with each and every other supporter." Another donor reported a broken window, one said a fliyer calling him a bigot was distributed around his hometown and others received envelopes containing suspicious white power, according to the lawsuit. Businesses employing people who contributed to the Proposition 8 campaign have been threatened with boycotts, the suit said. Supporters of the homosexual marriage ban fear the donor backlash will hurt their efforts to raise money in the future, perhaps to fight an initiative seeking to overturn the ban. "Several donors have indicated that they will not contribute to committee plaintiffs or similar organizations in the future because of the threats and harassment directed at them as a result of their contributions...and the public disclosure of that fact," the lawsuit said. The suit said courts have held that laws requiring disclosure of campaign contributions can be overturned or restricted if a group can make "an uncontroverted showing" that identifying its members can result in economic reprisals or threats of physical coercion. California's Political Reform Act, which voters approved in 1974, established disclosure requirements for candidates and campaign committees. The secretary of state's office and another defendant, the state's Fair Political Practices Commission, declined to comment Thursday on the lawsuit. But Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality California, the homosexual-rights group that led the campaign against Proposition 8, called it hypocritical for supporters of the measure to try to overturn voter-approved campaign finance laws. He said Proposition 8 supporters used campaign finance records during the campaign to threaten homosexual-rights supporters. "They've used these records to attack corporations, to attack individuals," Kors said. Peter Scheer, executive director of the First Amendment Coalition, which supports public access to government records and meetings, said the lawsuit is likely to be unsuccessful. But he also said the plaintiffs' arguments are not trivial. "The problem with their argument, of course, is that campaign finance laws, both at the state and federal level, have been litigated endlessly now since Watergate and the argument has, in one form or another, been rejected," Scheer said. He said courts have consistently failed to agree that contributors have a right to donate directly and anonymously to a candidate or campaign. He said some states have less restrictive reporting requirements, but they always include disclosure of donors.Don, Gays NEVER HAD the right to marry. How can it be taken from them if they never had it?Friendly neighborhood queer: The pendulum swings. Be careful that you bring the fight to people who respond appropriately. We try to be tolerant. Some push their luck. That is sad. more

Resolved Question: Gentlemen, do modern Feminists selectively redefine English terms to suit their interests...?

(NB: Long Q, no need to read nor answer if not interested). Many modern Feminists like to mention their opinions that gender is different from sex; often they'll make statements to the effect, "gender is a social construct, which is very different from one's sex." I took the liberty of looking in three standard (highly regarded) dictionaries of English, i.e. Oxford Dictionary, Merriam-Webster & American Heritage dictionary and all these sources define gender as synonymous with sex. Interestingly, when it comes to Feminism, modern Feminists don't feel that the REAL definition of the term should be adjusted to fit the true meaning given how it should reflect the meaning of the term as it pertains to MODERN times, hence revision. Do you find it interesting that modern Feminists are so SELECTIVE in which terms they CHOOSE to redefine? Which other terms do you feel modern Feminists will use selectivity in redefining in order to suit their special interests? Does this add to the body of evidence that modern Feminism is a purely self-serving doctrine predicated on selective measures in presentation of data, teaching, amongst other critical tenets (specifically hatred of men & Supremacy)? Will the word "man" also be redefined to mean "woman hater" or "rapist?" Where do you think they will stop? They can revise the meaning of the word to mean "a subhuman or defective entity" consistent with Ms. V. Solanas' definition as well (and this can have serious implications). *For those interested, I've taken the liberty of providing the definition of the adjective "modern" for you as referenced in Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English fyi: Modern- 1 a: of, relating to, or characteristic of the present or the immediate past : contemporary b: of, relating to, or characteristic of a period extending from a relevant remote past to the present time2: involving recent techniques, methods, or ideas : up-to-date3capitalized : of, relating to, or having the characteristics of the present or most recent period of development of a language4: of or relating to modernism : modernist. more

Resolved Question: I want to get a suit made at a tailors; what does the process involve exactly?

I like wearing suits and for a long time I have been saving up to get one tailor-made. I am in the UK- is the only place to go Savil Row, or do most cities have tailors capable of making a suit from scratch? I live in Bristol. What is involved in the process? I presume I have to book an appointment- do I turn up wearing casual clothes or one of my off-the-shelf suits? What exactly does the tailor do...is it five minutes with a tape measure, pick a colour and you're done? I am male, by the way. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am completely new to this and a little nervous- I don't want to make a complete fool of myself! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: what haircut suits me?

I am Filipino, brown-skinned with black hair that flows so straight and perhaps measures 5 inches from my chin. I have a round, inverted egg-shaped jaw and my chin is quite sharp. My face is quite thin and it's been my problem adding volume to my face with my super-straight hair, which can get wavy in an unkempt manner whenever I pony it for at least an hour. I'm used to having my hair cropped short (above chin level), with side-swept bangs but this hairstyle makes me look boyish and childish for my age i think (i'm 16). I want to add volume to my hair but i don't want to cut it so short. I originally wanted Alice Cullen's hairstyle but i figured that it probably won't suit me and it will be very hard to maintain. Also, I am a person who is not used to fixing my hair and I only comb my hair almost only once every day, after my bath in the morning. Please suggest what hairstyle you think will suit me and if possible, add a link of a picture of that hairstyle :D Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Evolution, proof it is disproven?

While better suited to the biology section I'm asking here for the intended audience. The point was made in this category. In another recent discussion about a god one of the answers included this quote: "First of don't listen to people who try to tell you that God doesn't exist The proof is all around us, and evolution is so stupid and has been disproven many times anyway." Disproven many times is the claim. So, how so? Where is this proof? How exactly is evolution stupid? Let me, an atheist, begin by stating evolution does not on its own disprove the existence of a god. evo·lu·tion -noun 1: one of a set of prescribed movements 2 a: a process of change in a certain direction : unfolding 2 b: the action or an instance of forming and giving something off : emission 2 c(1): a process of continuous change from a lower, simpler, or worse to a higher, more complex, or better state : growth 2 c(2): a process of gradual and relatively peaceful social, political, and economic advance 2 d: something evolved 3: the process of working out or developing 4 a: the historical development of a biological group (as a race or species) : phylogeny 4 b: a theory that the various types of animals and plants have their origin in other preexisting types and that the distinguishable differences are due to modifications in successive generations ; also : the process described by this theory 5: the extraction of a mathematical root 6: a process in which the whole universe is a progression of interrelated phenomena Typically the discussion revolves around definitions 4 and 6. There are millions of pieces of evidence. Biology, history, cosmology, and virtually every branch of science points to evolution in this sense, the development of species. Much of science points to this as the origin of species. We can measure it in a lab and in nature by monitoring the development of simple and complex life forms. We have located thousands of so-called transitional fossils. In biology evolution is the changes in the inherited traits of a species from one generation to another. The claim is there is none. I'm not even asking for proof of your god or gods nor refuting his/her/its existence, that's a different discussion. Invalid answers: You cannot use religious text. That is simply contradiction, mere gainsaying. "God did it" or "this book says so". It's "only a theory". In the context of science fitting the definition of evolution theory does not mean 'guess'. It means a tested set of facts. Somebody says so. A person's claim does not make something so. It must accompany falsifiable evidence. Opinion, simply choosing not to accept it is not proof. If the theory of evolution is disproven or stupid, show me. more

Resolved Question: Translation of the part of the Canterbury tales?

can someone translate this part to more modern english?? and give me the description of the host. plz Our Host gave us great welcome; everyone Was given a place and supper was begun. He served the finest victuals you could think, 770 The wine was strong and we were glad to drink. A very striking man our Host withal, And fit to be a marshal in a hall. His eyes were bright, his girth a little wide; There is no finer burgess in Cheapside.86 775 Bold in his speech, yet wise and full of tact, There was no manly attribute he lacked, What’s more he was a merry-hearted man. After our meal he jokingly began To talk of sport, and, among other things 780 After we’d settled up our reckonings, He said as follows: “Truly, gentlemen, You’re very welcome and I can’t think when —Upon my word I’m telling you no lie— I’ve seen a gathering here that looked so spry, 785 No, not this year, as in this tavern now. I’d think you up some fun if I knew how. And, as it happens, a thought has just occurred And it will cost you nothing, on my word. You’re off to Canterbury—well, God speed! 790 Blessed St. Thomas answer to your need! And I don’t doubt, before the journey’s done You mean to while the time in tales and fun. Indeed, there’s little pleasure for your bones Riding along and all as dumb as stones. 795 So let me then propose for your enjoyment, Just as I said, a suitable employment. And if my notion suits and you agree And promise to submit yourselves to me Playing your parts exactly as I say 800 Tomorrow as you ride along the way, Then by my father’s soul (and he is dead) If you don’t like it you can have my head! Hold up your hands, and not another word.” Well, our consent of course was not deferred, 805 It seemed not worth a serious debate; We all agreed to it at any rate And bade him issue what commands he would. “My lords,” he said, “now listen for your good, And please don’t treat my notion with disdain. 810 This is the point. I’ll make it short and plain. Each one of you shall help to make things slip By telling two stories on the outward trip To Canterbury, that’s what I intend, And, on the homeward way to journey’s end 815 Another two, tales from the days of old; And then the man whose story is best told, That is to say who gives the fullest measure Of good morality and general pleasure, He shall be given a supper, paid by all, 820 Here in this tavern, in this very hall, When we come back again from Canterbury. And in the hope to keep you bright and merry I’ll go along with you myself and ride All at my own expense and serve as guide. 825 I’ll be the judge, and those who won’t obey Shall pay for what we spend upon the way. Now if you all agree to what you’ve heard Tell me at once without another word, And I will make arrangements early for it.” 830 Of course we all agreed, in fact we swore it Delightedly, and made entreaty too That he should act as he proposed to do, Become our Governor in short, and be Judge of our tales and general referee, 835 And set the supper at a certain price. We promised to be ruled by his advice Come high, come low; unanimously thus We set him up in judgment over us. More wine was fetched, the business being done; 840 We drank it off and up went everyone To bed without a moment of delay. Early next morning at the spring of day Up rose our Host and roused us like a cock, Gathering us together in a flock, 845 And off we rode at slightly faster pace Than walking to St. Thomas’ watering-place;87 And there our Host drew up, began to ease His horse, and said, “Now, listen if you please, My lords! Remember what you promised me. 850 If evensong and matins will agree88 Let’s see who shall be first to tell a tale. And as I hope to drink good wine and ale I’ll be your judge. The rebel who disobeys, However much the journey costs, he pays. 855 Now draw for cut89 and then we can depart; The man who draws the shortest cut shall start.” this is my assignment, but i barely understand modern english, so for me to translate middle age english is pretty hard. more

Resolved Question: my mom keeps yelling at me and i feel useless how can i not feel like this!!?

I hate it and it makes me feel useless, the prior two years have been really bad for me, school wise and health wise, and my parents have been really nice to me by taking me to concerts or shows that i want to see. I did have depression during that time and i did and still am going to a psychologist (i talk to her) and she has helped me alot. But whenever my mom gets mad at me for no reason i get all upset and i feel useless. I've tried talking to her but she still is still the same. today i told her my swim suit for swimming was way too small and she's like " I told you to measure yourself me and mrs. F (a family friend) both said that we should measure you for a swim suit and you didnt want to listen, now you just have to go back to your coach and order a new one since you didnt listen" and she said it really mean and everything! I'm just sick of her acting like this to me and i told her before that there was a certain dead-line for the size and that i just used what my current bathing suit size is (it turned out to be a different style) i don't deserve to be treated like this and it just makes me feel all depressed again and i don't want to feel like that again because it was torture!!! more

Resolved Question: Tell me what you think of my FIT admission essay and please check te grammar I just finished it. Thaks?

I am Luis Fernando Cardenas Blacio, a graduate of one of the best college preparation schools in Ecuador, the American School of Guayaquil. My love and passion to menswear fashion encouraged studying abroad for my Bachelor’s degree in Menswear Design. I chose to attend Fashion Institute of Technology at New York because the major that the institute is offering fits my prospective as a hard worker and it makes me feel comfortable and happy in that aspect of my life. For now, I am attending Broward College in Guayaquil where I am giving my best focusing my future to FIT by doing liberal arts subjects for menswear major and I am directing a small menswear work shop. I didn’t study for a year after my graduation because I focused in my work and dedicate my self to learn in work. My work is to create patterns designed for the demand of clients and sew my new designs by my self in order to get what I want. My father, a great menswear designer from Ecuador, has always been a big influence for me. Since I was 12 he taught me all about menswear fashion. The art of sewing and making patterns made me extremely passionate that I started learn how to sew and to make patterns for men clothe. Unfortunately, my father died when I was 15, I was still at high school. By this time, I had one strong feeling and idea in my mind and my heart, continue with the business. I decided to build a small workshop in the city where we live, Guayaquil. At the beginning I started to make the patterns and studying by my self through books. Then I began to study by myself how to sew them with the people that worked with my father applying good techniques and with a lot of practice I finally established a small work shop. I worked every day with passion and in honor of my father. At the age of sixteen I started the made to measure service of suits and designs for men. I was the only one that knew the technique of tailoring of my father since I was so interested from so young. Now we have three shops that are growing in Guayaquil and are well known. This experience has made me to be independent and mature, and to realize that dreams come with a lot of effort, stress, creativity and failings but it is your love for what you do that will encourage you to continue. What I can offer to FIT is not only my abilities and great fascination for men fashion, what I can really offer is a sample and a message of passion with unconditional love to what God gave me and what I have been developing through experience and constant work. I am not only working to a self realization, I am working in order to make great things to great people, in order to be a model of passion and dedication for future generations. FIT will be my opportunity to demonstrate my creativity even thought that I demonstrate it each day of my life. I will represent FIT in the best way possible. It will be more than a motivation for me. I believe that people should do what they love to do, in my case I love to create new clothe for men, to combine colors, innovate styles by alternating specific parts of clothe, make men look masculine and fashion in a creative and original aspect, and to travel in order to be inspired by different cultures. I want to demonstrate what I know to do and learn more. Consequently, I will demonstrate my love in the process and I will succeed in FIT not only in honor of my father or for gaining publicity. I really know that because all my plans and aspiration as a professional including my own line for men clothe are perfectly fitted with the menswear mayor subjects in FIT. I trust myself, and consequently I trust my choices. The Fashion Institute of Technology in my favorite city, New York, will be my new home.  more

Resolved Question: Are they jolly well serrious?

Sunday October 26, 02:55 PM Storm in a pint glass in Britain **************************** Geez I hope they dont do that to me Single Malt **************************************... LONDON (AFP) - British officials are looking at allowing pubs to serve two-thirds of a pint of beer as well as pints and half-pints, tinkering with a national icon in a break with centuries of tradition. The National Weights and Measures Laboratory (NWML) is contemplating proposals aimed at giving consumers greater choice over the measures of food and drink they can buy. Facing a downturn in profits due to the credit crunch, the smoking ban and rising alcohol taxes, pubs are keen to try out anything that may boost trade, in particular by tempting women who do not fancy drinking a whole pint (568 millilitres). The new measure could also be more suitable for popular European lagers, which are stronger than traditional British ales. Currently, draught beer and cider is served in Britain in pints or half pints. A third of a pint remains a legal measure, though it is rarely seen outside hardcore beer festivals. Any threat of fiddling with traditional imperial measurements -- especially beer -- and any change to pub rules usually gets Britons spluttering the froth off their pints. "Time could be called on more than 300 years of pub history in Britain," said The Daily Telegraph newspaper. "It would be the first time since William of Orange was on the throne (1650-1702) that pub goers would be able to drink such an unusual measure." Commentator Tim Jones, writing in The Times newspaper, said the measure "represents yet another insult to the judgment, intelligence and integrity of the drinking classes". If it was adopted "because of demand from girls who would only order one a night while taking up valuable drinking space or by callow youths better suited to model making, another nail would be driven into what used to be the great British pub," he said. NWML's public consultation, which runs until January 1, asks "whether a new two-thirds of a pint measure should be available to drinkers alongside the current legal measures. "This has been proposed by the beer and pub trade to allow greater flexibility in the service of draught beers, especially those with a higher alcohol content." The measure is commonly served in Australia, where a "schooner" stops cold lager turning warm in the hot climate before drinkers have finished their glass. The British Beer and Pub Association, whose members account for 98 percent of beer brewed in Britain and more than half Britain's 58,000 pubs, feels the two-thirds measure could be a way of reviving pubs, which it said were closing at an alarming rate of five per week. "There's no doubt pubs are facing major challenges so every little helps and this is one way of doing it," a BBPA spokesman told AFP. "It would give consumers more choice -- you can already have wine in different sizes, why not beer? And it would encourage women to try it." Alcohol Concern, the national agency on alcohol misuse, said the plan was part of a worrying trend. "We have seen a move from brewers to move away from a men-only market, to open the market up to women," said a spokeswoman. "It may be that this two-thirds of a pint measure will allow pubs and producers to start marketing beers for women, so there is a possibility they would be attracted to beers." "It is possible that introducing yet another measure will confuse people even further," she added. "It might make people think they're drinking less when they would actually be drinking as much or even more. Two-thirds of a pint of a much stronger lager can contain more units of alcohol than a full pint." England's Ale Measures Act 1698 stated that beer should be sold in pints or quarts (two pints) -- anyone selling short measures being "of evil consequence" and guilty of "a great wrong and prejudice to wayfaring men, travellers, manufacturers, labourers". The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), meanwhile, felt that rather than smaller glasses, pubs should first of all be filling up the ones they are already using, with one in four pints short by more than five percent.  more
