Open Question: Kind of dreading sharing my pregnancy news with everyone---is it safe to tell yet? I REALLY need your opinions?

I'm a little over 10 weeks pregnant. My husband and I had decided to wait until at least 12 weeks to tell everyone our news. With my 1st pregnancy, everyone in the WHOLE WORLD knew about the pregnancy right away. My mother and his both have serious boundary issues, and with all of the unsolicited advice, PERSONAL questions and rude criticisms between the two of them it was a LOOOONG pregnancy. This time I anticipate that it may be worse because my husband is about to deploy to Iraq and will be absent for my 2nd and 3rd trimesters, meaning my mother/his mother will probably expect to come "help" me (ahem, intrude) at all times while he is gone. I am fiercely independent and don't need the "advice" of my mother and his, who are both among the most emotional train wrecks that I have ever met. I'm also scared that I might still miscarry since I haven't hit the magical "12 week mark" yet. I really wouldn't want to share this news with everyone if it happened. If I had good ultrasounds at 6 and 8 weeks with heart beats does that count for anything? Or is miscarriage still a strong possibility? The reason why we are considering sharing the news a little early is because unfortunately my aunt who has cervical cancer is very likely to die soon. If she dies within the next few weeks, we will have to wait even longer to share the news (which will be hard to conceal because my belly is already getting round), because I think it would be tacky to spill the news at a family event dedicated to my aunt's memory. How likely really am I to miscarry, and what does everyone think about the social aspects of my dilemma? How would you handle this? more

I enjoy reading the news and reading intelligently written articles in newspapers. I'm intelligent enough to reach my own opinions without articles in newspapers trying to brainwash me with their political agendas. I'm not stupid enough to read the one paragraph news in the Sun etc, and I find a lot of the indepth articles in the Daily Mail interesting and well written, but it turns me off with their anti Labour and pro Conservative agenda. I like the way they stand up for British culture, but I would never vote Conservative in a million years. Should I carry on buying the Daily Mail and brush off their agenda, or what other alternative can I have to read interesting and well written articles without a political agenda? I would feel the same about other newspapers trying to brainwash me with other political agendas. I don't want anything too boring and stuffy like the former broad sheets. more

Open Question: are cancerous breast lumps smooth?

i'm 33 and during a gyno visit, my dr said i have a breast issue in my left breast. he said he felt something smooth and is sending me for a mammo and ultrasound. he said since it was the week after my period, the breasts should be calm and he shouldnt feel anything. a couple of things concern and confuse me. I was at my own gyno in april and he did not feel or mention a lump. The reason I had to go to a 2nd gyno was for a follow up on a cervix thing, that turned out to be nothing. Both doctors are top doctors in the country, which makes me feel good. but why Didn't the 1st doctor feel this lump 2 and 1/2 months ago? could it have grown that fast? also, i have been trying to research on the difference between cysts and cancerous lumps. i am finding alot of stuff that says cysts are smooth feeling. so am i correct to think that cancerous tumors are not smooth? if so, why is he sending me for the mammo...i am terrified of getting bad news more

Open Question: The "Gay Agenda" - Do we need to organize better?

Homophobes and religious folk often talk about "the gay agenda". What makes me laugh about this is how they think we literally meet in a board room, curtains drawn, rays of sunlight piercing through our cigar smoke. And in that room we strategize our master plan to turn the world gay. It just makes me laugh because there is no central gay body where we're carrying out the agenda of that body. The gay movement is composed of millions of individuals who use their heart as their guide, not the orders of a group. But it got me to thinking about something... Do you guys think it would be beneficial to have some kind of event, like an annual conference in the mountains or someplace fun (like a retreat), where we could talk about the things going on in the community right now that pose problems, find out the latest breakthroughs and news with the AIDS crisis. All the PACs (PFLAG, GLAAD, ACLU, GSA, GLSEN, etc) could all give presentations on what awareness campaigns they're doing, going to start, and get input from the community, etc. Think of it like an intelligence briefing for the more book-wormish among us who would be in to something like that. It would be like an event to formulate ideas behind the scenes of our community. More or less, I just think it might be fun to have an event that's not about public sex and drinking and tripping on e, but an event where we could all go as people and discuss all these things (instead of some impersonal discussion board on a website - which is where most of these conversations take place). I'd like to get peoples thoughts though, and if they would ever attend something like that... a conference where they are privy to all the back-stage discussions about our community and could take part in them. more

In other Asian countries, Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, etc. are the dominant religions. They don't get their morals from the Bible. In fact, many of them have probably have never read or seen a Bible. Japan has about a 60% less crime rate than the USA.
